Happy New Year

It has been a strange year to say the  least. I  look back to  this exact moment but last year when it was turning from  2010 to 2011 and the things that  I  thought were going to happen. Some did while others went the  other  way  completely.

I am not going to be making any  new  years  resolutions. I  learned  a  long time ago that if  you want something to be done, there shouldn’t  be a specific time that  one should wait for. Just wake up one day and do it.

So what is going  to be in store in 2012? Well one thing is  for  certain is the world is definately not  going to end  no matter what people say. People will continue to say it will end and continue to believe what they want, but life  as we know it will just continue to revolve around us and there is nothing that we can do to stop it.

Somewhere  deep in my gut I have a strong feeling that keeps tugging at me and telling  me that  2012 will be a year where there will be major changes  happening, either  good or bad, and they  will only help me go further  in my quest of the thing called life.

The thing that always surprises me  each and every year is that fact that  it all happened so fast and it’s back here once again. It only happened yesterday or so you think. Also, upon waking up it is as though the body is on hold until the clock strikes midnight. You continue to get ready, you eat, you sleep, make love or whatever it is that you do, but the heart and soul is waiting… waiting… for something. Then the time arrives and the ball slowly lowers and you start thinking in a new way because you have a clean slate for a completely new year.

I hope everyone has a happy, safe, and enjoyable Happy New Year.  2012 .. we’re waiting for you.

Treachery in Death Book Review

Title: Treachery in Death by J.D. Robb

Published:  February 22nd 2011

Publisher: Putnam Adult

This book has been out for a bit but with my long list of “to-read” books it has taken me a while to get to it although this is one of my favorite series. Before I get to the review a few things to think over and ponder. It is interesting that by some luck back in the 8th grade I picked up a random book at the library called Naked In Death by J.D.Robb. I didnt know the author or her style back then but something within me was telling me to give it a try and read it. It was the first book in a series featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke. I loved it and to this day read all the books and since they are a really good read, I am always waiting for long stretches of time before the next one is published. It does help by re-reading some of my favorites until I can get my hands on the latest one.

For the first time ever, she is the primary on a case and this makes her scared to her bones. Despite knowing what to do, it still does not erase the fear that she might miss a clue, or mess something up that will screw up the case and disappoint Lieutenant Eve Dallas. The loyal and dependable Peabody gets put in a dangerous situation where she must use her skills to come out alive and re-tell the tale to Dallas.  This releases a chain reaction where lives begin to shatter and people’s reputations are smeared. Through the help of her coworkers, Dallas, Feeney, McNab and many others, they embark on a case that is very fragile and must be handled with care.

The book is filled with a lot of action packed scenes where we get to see just what kind of characters there are. The details are as always thorough and give you a good look in depth into each character that is involved within the story. It is definately a page turner and makes you want to know what is going to happen next. There is also tension between Roarke and Eve which always makes for a good read. They fight with passion and they make up with passion. This book within the series did not disappoint at  all but fulfilled the wants that are deep inside for a book.

There are many times when you gasp or are in shock  about what Lieutenant Renee is doing within her squad and what the men under her command are getting away with.  She is not only selfish, but evil, not caring about people’s feelings or lives, just her own. This story tells of a cop gone rogue all for the sake of money and greed. Not caring what the NYSPD stand and fight for every day, just caring about the next bust, the next score that will give her more money.

First of December

December has finally arrived!

It’s been a long year and waiting for this month. While everyone is already in the holiday spirit, I am just getting there. I don’t know about everyone else but for me it just seems weird to think about and do anything related to Christmas before the month of when it happens. It could be that I like to savour the whole month of December and try to make it last for as long as possible for two reasons. One: it’s the holiday season. Two: The sooner that December ends the sooner the new year comes with its scary unknowns and the tell tale sign that everyone is getting older, and time is flying by.

December has all the goodies in store from presents, to snow to quality time spent with family and eating lots of holiday desserts that make us wince come the new year.

The first snow fell yesterday and it was sweet. The white snowflakes swirling down to fall on your nose or in your hair, twirling around in circles with sheer joy. The first snow always makes me feel nostalgic and think back to when I was a child and when everything used to be so much simpler. When responsibilities didn’t take up most of the thinking space within the brain, where all we had to worry about was doing hw and chores, but nothing too big. That innocence that gets lost in the growing up stage where reality shakes you up and forces you to see what the world is really like not the make believe stuff we are told.

Despite all the harsh realities, there is still this magic about Christmas time and December and dreaming while watching the snow flakes fall from the sky.

Question Of The Day

Question of the day: Why do people get in the holiday spirit when it’s not even December yet?

As early as mid November people are already putting up Christmas lights and Christmas shopping.

I am always shocked to see that each year it seems the holidays come earlier and earlier despite having the dates the same. It could be that all the years before it was like that too, but this year I am more observant because school work is not taking all of my time and energy. Why is it that people put Christmas trees up and light their homes from the outside with different lights and it’s not even December?

I believe it could be due to consumerism and the belief that as soon as Thanksgiving is over everything that has to do with Christmas must go up the next day so that people have time to shop and get their gifts. On the other hand, I think a month is more than enough to figure out what to get your special loved ones. People shop and spend money and come January they are fearful because their credit cards are maxed out, but that’s a different issue altogether.

Maybe we as a society should come up with a rule that says no indication of holidays until Dec 1. I bet a lot of people would freak if some kind of law got passed proclaiming that. I guess it is all in the mentality of what you believe in, where you come from and what you stand for. There are people who love the holidays, while others abhor it.

Onion Man

Onion Man by Kathryn Mockler

I am not one for poetry but this kind of poetry I can understand and appreciate. The Onion Man by Kathryn Mockler is a one of a kind read that is both unique and refreshing. The story is told from the point of view of an eighteen-year-old girl working over the summer at a corn canning factory in London, Ontario. At the turn of the page, there is something new to discover about her boyfriend Clinton, her terminally ill grandfather, her alcoholic mother and the strange man who eats an onion like an apple. It is told through numerous poems that are linked together to make a long lasting impression on the reader.

I found the read a poignant one tugging at my heart strings for the Onion Man. He is a character that is disliked and not treated well because of his status within the country. As I turned each page and found something new about the girl, I could not put the book down because I needed to know and see what will happen next. The underlying messages that are embedded into this book show through if you just look closely enough.

The people at the factory playing with their lives as they get stoned, the boyfriend trying to act cool in showing a trick on the motorcycle when the girl is still on it only to cause harm, a mother who doesn’t really care about anything except for the next swig of the bottle. These people show the hardships of what it means to live in a small town where there are no real opportunities.

I found the structure and the style to be very easy on the eyes and very compelling. It makes you want for the eighteen year old girl to succeed without the selfish boyfriend and live her own life and go to university.

My only complaint about the book was the lack of mention of Onion Man. One of the main reasons that I picked up and read Onion Man was because of the compelling cover and the mysterious man who eats onions every day. As I first reached the middle of the book and then the end I was disappointed to find that he is barely mentioned before there is a tragedy that happens to him. I don’t know whether the author did that on purpose or not, but I think it would have been better if the readers got to know him more.

I would definitely recommend the Onion Man.
